Same shit

Even though it's cnn, it's a pretty good overview of the response comic books got when they were originally introduced, by lawmakers and others.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/books/05/08/comic.books/index.html?iref=mpstoryview

Which is pretty much identical to the response that new forms of music receive, and video games get a lot of.

I just wonder how dumb people must be to just not see this cycle repeating over and over again. This is not unlike the struggle to legalize inter-racial marriage, which is being repeated practically word for word in regards to same-sex marriage. How much time and energy and money is wasted fighting the same stupid losing battles every couple decades?

How many more times do we need to go through this shit before people get the underlying concepts.

So I woke up this morning with a very clear image in my head that the movie Clue was in some ways very similar to Shakespeare's writing style. Unlike typical errant waking thoughts however, this one still makes sense to me upon later reflection.

I rarely remember my dreams.

Setting: Haunted house, but more of a video game or movie kinda haunted house, not very threatening. Wasn't too worried until I went out back and there was a huge rundown backyard with small crows and giant ravens that were hostile and would not be shooed away. I killed one of the crows and threw it at the ravens as someone shrieked at me not to kill the birds (in a scared way, not angry). I went to run to the house as a procession of birds and ghosts approached, and I noticed that there was a distorted ghost with an old revolver mixed in. Rather than be shot in the back, I charged and managed to wrest the gun from the ghost thing (like a normal head with some of a tiny body) which caused them all to disperse. As the ghost went to leave I began to taunt it (I was angry by this point; fucking ghosts and their bullshit). It eventually came back around, and while I firmly believed the gun could hurt it, it jammed when it ran towards me. I tried to back up to the house but I think another ghost came up behind me and grabbed me because I got pinned. The other ghost latched onto me as well and I could feel my energy and consciousness slipping away. I tried to struggle, but my right arm was immobilized and my left arm was so weak that my trying to claw at the one's face resulted in feebly pulling its bottom lip down. I can still vividly recall fighting the overwhelming drowsiness that was overtaking me, trying to pull away and scream and survive. Just as I was about to go under it felt like I managed to rip away and actually pulled up off my bed in real life. I was still extremely tired but it felt like they were still trying to pull me under. I was positive that if I let myself go back to sleep I would be right back where I was. I stayed awake.

There you have it. If I disappear or die or turn evil tomorrow, you'll all know why.

Game Beaten: Lego Starwars (PC)

So I've been trying to chip away at my game backlog and just finished this platformer.

The lego style is a really novel way of keeping system requirements reasonable while still making the game look how it's intended. To be honest, I'm surprised this was not done before and I expect to see a shit-ton more Lego/{Insert Franchise Here} games in the future. It loosely follows through the course of the recent crappy trilogy which leaves a lot to be desired for the plot, though that's not really the game's fault.

The controls are very solid (I used a PS2 controller through a USB port to my PC) and overall it felt very responsive, though as usual there were some areas that the camera shifting causes problems such as trying to run across a bridge when you suddenly need to push in a different direction to keep going straight, hrm.

I was really impressed with the gameplay... initially. Each level introduced more characters with unique abilities and it listed dozens of characters yet to be unlocked, so it felt like a lot of time was taken to make a wide variety of solid mechanics. Unfortunately, after the first few characters, shit basically starts to repeat. Ah, another guy that shoots a laser blaster and can use a grappling hook, terrific. This makes it give a much better initial impression than a lasting one.

The game itself is very easy, as when you die you reappear right nearby with some coin loss (you collect coins on each level). Beating it is thus just a matter of time, as even when you have zero coins you keep respawning anyway. Each episode has 6 or 7 levels you need to play through (though some of them are very short) and the initial run through took less than 10 hours (estimated). BUT, if you want to unlock the special secret level, you need to make sure you collect enough coins on each level first. Ok, that's another few hours as a couple of the levels seem like they were made to be a bitch in this regard, but then you get access to "Episode IV"... sorta. That's if the original Star Wars consisted of Darth Vadar tearing apart Princess Leia's ship and building the word "Lego" out of... legos, and then ending abruptly (But hey, that's what the sequel is for).

There is also some other collection goal to get 10 lego canisters per level, but as far as I can tell all that lets you do is look at a bunch of lego space ships in a parking lot (literally). I'm not going to invest another several hours trying to track down each one, as I'm pretty damn bored with the game at this point. There is a good amount of stuff to unlock by spending your accumulated points, and while the majority of it is cosmectic (mustaches for example), you can actually get things like invincibility and a canister detector (which sorta works). Don't worry, there is really no viable way you could afford these until after you beat the first three episodes.

Overall, I'd give it a 7.6 or so, and say it's worth playing if you are looking for a half decent platformer.

Next up: Prince of Persia 1, 2 and 3.

P.S. I also beat Dreamfall last month. Too conflicted to post a review though.
